eCampus.com Review
The last, but certainly not the least company, in our review series for online book rentals and used book sales is eCampus.com. The company offers eBook and printed textbook materials as well as a whole lot of other stuff that one might find useful in college, such as DVDs, t-shirts and sweatshirts, art supplies, medical supplies, and other collectibles that one might find interesting. However, since we’re focusing our review on book renting, buying, and selling, we’ll leave the t-shirt selling business to the others for a more detailed look.
Particular to the book-renting industry, we reviewed eCampus.com using the same set of criteria that we used for the other companies, namely Key Features and Company Strengths, Ease-of-Use, Pricing, Customer Support, and Shipping. As usual, this review is an unbiased assessment of company performance and is a product of surveying various internet forums, blogs, customer feedback, company profile and its industry standing versus established names. We do not impose any strict recommendations on the customer but leave the decision-making in the capable hands of the people that do them; we only serve to provide the available data and analysis with bits and pieces of advises thrown in-between. In the end, we too believe in the saying that the customer is always right.
Key Features and Strengths
A big consequence of eCampus.com not specializing in textbook or eBook renting alone is reflected in its available choices for book titles. Frankly, it’s not as wide and varied as we would have liked but it does provide sufficient options for common field, subjects and topics. One will however not find many rare titles on-stock at eCampus.com which is to say that if you are looking for something very specific, this is not the place for you. Common titles are available and so are frequently used and recommended editions but they are limited to a degree that one has to order early to get the best copies. In the end, the selection is serviceable but not impressive and one can do better finding resources elsewhere.
The one feature however that ups eCampus.com’s reputation in the industry is its clever introduction of the eCampus marketplace which is a place where all people can discuss and share opinions, feedback and reviews including posting listings of personal books-for-sales by users and for users. This allows for a more transparent flow of information without the requisite hassle that is always present in the internet and one is served best reading these reviews and feedbacks before finally deciding on placing an order.
Our Score: 3.5/5
Ease-of-Use
There is nothing special about eCampus.com and its policies pertaining to ease-of-use. Everything is pretty much industry-standard, and the website design, at least according to some users, is below par. The website does provide the standard help page with FAQs but your best bet for a help-page is at the eCampus marketplace where real people can respond to your problems from an honest point-of-view.
Our Score: 3/5
Pricing
Various other reviews and surveys conducted to poll different book-renting and used books selling outfits show mix results for eCampus.com in-terms of pricing. In some cases, the textbooks for rent were offered up to 50% off of the listing price while in others, it was up to 70% off. There are obviously cheaper alternatives out in the market and one is best advised to search for the best prices before confirming a rent order.
In terms of buyback pricing, the same mixed results were also observed with quoted prices ranging from a few dollars lower or higher than the competition. Overall, this suggests that pricing is not a primary selling point for eCampus.com since it clearly does not distinguish itself by renting lower or buying higher. Still, the use of the online marketplace for customers provides an excellent opportunity for direct selling and there are instances when one can sell higher than the quoted buyback. As is with renting, the end-user is advised to canvass properly before confirming a sale.
Our Score: 3/5
Customer Service Support
There are likewise no strong selling points for eCampus.com pertaining to customer service with some feedbacks even suggesting that customer service is either slow, uncooperative or sometimes both. Feedback options are standard, as in phone, email and help desk support. It would help for one to do more research on customer service perception by eCampus.com as this is the best gauge for how likeable the Customer Service program indeed is but in summary, it is probably not a wrong conclusion to suggest that other companies are better in this regard.
Unlike most companies though, eCampus.com offers a 30-day return policy where one can get a refund for returning books minus 10% restocking fee. The only requirement is to be prompt with the return and to ship the books back in the original condition. Compared to other risky transactions with lesser-known companies, this should provide good promise that is worth exploring.
Our Score: 3/5
Shipping
Only orders above $59 carry a free-shipping clause. All other transactions are charged accordingly depending on the number of days you can spare to wait for your order to arrive. Return shipping is free using the standard prepaid mailing label format.
There are likewise reports of orders that did not arrive on-time and still others that did not arrive altogether so it is always best to double-check the status of all orders every now and then. As is suggested in other reviews, when in doubt, do not experience with new renters.
Our Score: 3/5
Summary
eCampus sells extra products aside from eBooks and textbooks so if you are looking to score side-buys for a bargain, this is the place to go. Otherwise, one is better off looking for book-rentals elsewhere.
Still, we leave it to the consumer to make informed decisions. After all, and as said above, the customer is always right.
